TACTICAL DRIVING SKILLS

Since this tactical driving manual was written from a modern perspective, it covers more than traditional defensive driving and you will not find many of the common terms or acronyms that were used when teaching drivers ed 10 or 15 years ago, such as zone control, path of travel, or SIPDE.  Zone control was replaced by 360-awareness, path of travel was replaced by the word line, as in delayed-apex line, and SIPDE (Search, Identify, Predict, Decide, and Execute) was replaced by the SIR Method (Scan, Interpret, and React).

I also use phrases such as “Get off the X,” which means do not stay in a dangerous area any longer than necessary and “Observe but do not provoke,” which is a technique that will help you avoid road rage.

Distracted, impaired, and reckless driving are major causes for serious accidents—and I address these issues in the manual—but I believe that poor training or no training is also a major cause for serious accidents. Far too many drivers are using or being taught obsolete driving skills that are dangerous to use when driving modern vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated in a report: “Because classic driver education is primarily focused on training drivers to pass the licensing exams, it is not surprising that safety-related information, including hazard and risk perception, may get ‘lost’ in the mix.” I'm hoping that this driving manual will help put things such as hazard and risk perception back into the mix.

If you are not familiar with phrases such as 3-second rule, space cushion, or cover the brake or you would like to learn more about how to protect yourself from tailgaters or distracted drivers, please download this tactical driving manual.
